Writing Moments from Your Life Part 1

Last week we enjoyed a wonderful first Writing Moments from Your Life session at Creative Cafe. The workshop was well attended and everybody got stuck in with the exercises.Over the next few weeks I look forward to sharing some snippets from the group.

A Computer Expert in Training by Margaret

My grandson gave me an old laptop and advised me to get online and be a ‘with it’ Granny. I did as he said and at a cost of £55 had the internet installed and then sat down to be a computer expert… That was one year ago now and I still don’t know how to use it! I purchased a tablet and have had several lessons with Age UK. I’ve also had six lessons with the council. In fact I’ve got a certificate to say that I’ve completed the course so I should know what I’m doing!

Mr Jolly’s Birthday by Dee

Mr Jolly was my history teacher at school. He was bald and I thought he was pretty old too – people of 40 looked ancient to a 14 year old! I heard that his birthday was in two days time and wanted to get him a present. Giggling as an idea crept in mind I scurried off to the shop and bought a big black comb then removed all the teeth before wrapping it in pretty paper. Then I bought a tin of Pal (dog food) which claimed to ‘prolong an active life’… ideal! The birthday arrived and our class walked into our history classroom where I presented the gifts as we all sand Happy Birthday. His face was a picture and he obviously took the joke very well as I wasn’t punished. We didn’t do much in history class that day either. Result!

Writing Moments from Your Life

Are there moments from your life you’d like to record for family/friends/generations to come? Or moments to celebrate and share? Do you have photographs that need words to give the ‘full’ picture?

‘Writing Moments from Your Life’ is about you, creatively engaging with your own unique life through your own words. If you’d like to learn something new, have some fun with ‘free writing’ and ‘clusters’ to help jog our memories and get us writing, please do join us.

We’ll be ‘Writing Moments from Your Life’ at the Creative Cafe over the following three weeks: 18th July, 25th July and 1st August.

We have 10 iPads available for use every week plus card crafts at every session so why not pop in for a cuppa and meet our friendly group?

Music & Movement prompts laughter and fun

On Monday 11th July we welcomed Emma Connor to Creative Cafe to deliver a taster Music& Movement session with the group. Emma’s ethos is that there is no ‘right’ way to be in sessions and values each individual’s contribution.  A variety of props ranging from feathers, scarves, streamers and balloons, were used to add vibrancy to the session while classic Motown tunes provided us with the melodies and rhythm to move to. After a gentle warm up the group participated in a ‘call and response’ exercise that enabled them to share movements, ranging from simple stretches to twirls and classic dance moves. Inevitably this prompted lots of laughter! The wonderful thing about the session is that it was so inclusive, whether you were seated or were standing their were moves to suit each person’s ability.

Dancing and laughter works up a thirst and once the group settled down with a much deserved cuppa and a biscuit they chatted animatedly about the session.

“I have arthritis and get very stiff. That helped me enormously – really loosened the joints! I’m new here at Creative Cafe and didn’t know what to expect. It was nice to be part of a group and I will definitely be back!”

“That was great fun! It really brought everybody together and was so nice to see so many happy faces and hear everyone laughing. Let’s do it again…”

We look forward to welcoming Emma back to Creative Cafe in the autumn for another fun-filled session!
